WHAT TO KNOW

CT

01

Clinical need

The physician considers whether CT is appropriate for the question being evaluated.

02

Safety review

Pregnancy possibility, allergies and kidney history may affect the examination plan.

03

Contrast

Some CT examinations use contrast material; others do not.

Detailed cross-sectional imaging

CT uses x-rays and computer processing to create detailed images. The examination area and protocol are selected according to the clinical purpose.

  • Bring relevant prior images or reports when available.
  • Tell the team about possible pregnancy and previous contrast reactions.
  • Share kidney disease, thyroid disease and current medication information.

Appropriate imaging matters

Because CT uses ionizing radiation, the benefit of the examination should be considered in relation to its purpose. A different examination may be recommended in some situations.
